I think there are basically 4 stages of forgiveness. In the first stage. It is conditional judgement. I will forgive that person only if they ask me nicely, or beg, or die slowly and painfully in extreme cases. But of course that is not forgiveness. In the 2nd stage, I realize that not forgiving cause me real pain and misery in the form of all kinds of mental, emotional and spiritual sickness, so we decide to forgive to get well and get on with our lives.
