A new company is hoping to reverse deforestation by using drones to plant trees. The company, BioCarbon Engineering, plans to disperse seedlings using drones, which could plant up to one billion trees per year.
“We are going to counter industrial scale deforestation using industrial scale reforestation,” says Lauren Fletcher, the founder of BioCarbon Engineering.
“Together with tree seeds, we hope to seed in other species including micro-organisms and fungi to improve the soil quality and ensure long-term sustainability of our efforts,” she added.
In addition to just planting seeds, the company also maps various different areas of the earth to determine which regions are best suited for planting. This ensures optimal growth and prevents waste.
“The only way we’re going to take on these age-old problems is with techniques that weren’t available to us before. By using this approach we can meet the scale of the problem out there,” Fletcher said.
