Biography of Charles Manson
Charles Manson was a convicted serial killer who has become an icon of evil. In the late 1960s, Manson founded a hippie cult group known as "the Family" whom he manipulated into brutally killing others on his behalf.
Charles Manson was born Charles Milles Maddox on November 12, 1934, in Cincinnati, Ohio to 16-year-old Kathleen Maddox. Kathleen had run away from home at the age of 15, presumably out of rebellion from her religious upbringing.
Shortly after his Charles' birth, she married William Manson. Despite their brief marriage, her son took his name and would be known as Charles Manson from then on.
Kathleen was known to drink too much and spent periods of time in jail, including prison time for strong-armed robbery in 1940. It also seems as if she really did not want to be a mother, as demonstrated by one story that Manson often tells:
"Mom was in a cafe one afternoon with me on her lap. The waitress, a would-be mother without a child of her own, jokingly told my Mom she'd buy me from her. Mom replied, 'A pitcher of beer and he's yours.' The waitress set up the beer, Mom stuck around long enough to finish it off and left the place without me. Several days later my uncle had to search the town for the waitress and take me home."
Since his mother couldn't take care of him, Manson spent his youth at the homes of various relatives.
These were not good experiences for the young boy. His grandmother continued the religious fanaticism she pushed onto Manson's mother and one uncle ridiculed him for being too girly, even dressing him as such for school. In another situation, the uncle he was staying with committed suicide because his land was being seized by authorities.
After an unsuccessful reunion with his mother because of her latest boyfriend, Manson began to steal at the age of nine. His first encounter with incarceration was at Indiana's Gibault Home for Boys. This would not be his last reform school and it wasn't long before he added burglary and auto theft to his repertoire. He would escape a school, steal, get caught, and be back in a reform school again, over and over.
As a teenager, Manson was a loner and often lived on his own when not incarcerated. This is when he started to become the master manipulator that would shape his adult years. He became adept at knowing what he could get out of whom.
When he was 17, he drove a stolen car across state lines, leading to his first federal offense and a stint in federal prison. During his first year there, he racked up eight assault charges before being transferred to another facility.
In 1954, at age 19, Manson was released on parole after an unusual bout of good behavior. The next year, he married a 17-year-old waitress named Rosalie Willis and the two took off for California in a stolen car.
It was not long before Rosalie became pregnant. This was beneficial for Manson because it actually got him probation rather than prison time for stealing a car.
His luck would not last, though.
In March 1956, Rosalie gave birth to Charles Manson Jr. (he committed suicide in 1993), just one month before his father was sent to prison after his probation was revoked. The sentence this time was three years in Terminal Island Prison. After just one year, his wife found someone new, left town, and divorced Manson in June 1957.
In 1958, Manson was released from prison. While out, Manson began pimping in Hollywood. He also conned a young woman out of money and, in 1959, received a 10-year suspended sentence for stealing checks from mailboxes.
He also married again, this time to a prostitute named Candy Stevens (her real name was Leona), and fathered a second son, Charles Luther Manson. She would divorce him shortly after his next prison sentence.
This arrest occurred on June 1, 1960. The charge was crossing state lines with the intent of prostitution and it led to the immediate revocation of his parole. He was sentenced to seven years and sent to the McNeil Island Penitentiary off the coast of Washington State. Part of his sentence would be served back at California's Terminal Island.
It was during this prison sentence that Manson began studying Scientology and music. He befriended the infamous Alvin "Creepy" Karpis, a former member of Ma Barker's gang. After Karpis taught Charles Manson to play the steel guitar, Manson became obsessed with making music. He practiced all the time, wrote dozens of original songs, and started singing. He believed that when he got out of prison, he could be a famous musician.
On March 21, 1967, Manson was once again released from prison. This time he headed to San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury where, with a guitar and drugs, he blended in and began to get a following.
Mary Brunner was one of the first to fall for Manson. The UC Berkeley librarian with a college degree invited him to move in and her life would change forever. It was not long before she started doing drugs and quit her job to follow Manson where ever he went. She was the key figure who helped entice others to join what would be called the Manson Family. Lynette Fromme soon joined Mary Brunner and Manson. In San Francisco, the trio found many young people who were lost and searching for a purpose in life. Manson's lengthy prophesies and hypnotic, coercive songs led to a reputation that he had some sort of sixth sense.
He relished this new position as a mentor and the skills of manipulation he had honed in childhood and prison only fueled his attraction to those who were vulnerable.
He and his followers saw Manson as a guru and prophet and they would follow him anywhere. In 1968, Manson and several of his followers drove to Southern California.
Manson was still hoping for a music career. Through an acquaintance, Manson met and hung out with Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys. The Beach Boys even recorded one of Manson's songs, which appeared as "Never Learn Not to Love" on the B-side of their "20/20" album.
Through Wilson, Manson met Terry Melcher, Doris Day's son. Manson believed Melcher was going to advance his music career but when nothing happened, Manson was very upset.
During this time, Charles Manson and some of his followers moved to the Spahn Ranch. Located northwest of San Fernando Valley in Chatsworth, the ranch had been a popular location to film westerns in the 1940s and 1950s. Once Manson and his followers moved in, it became a cult compound for "The Family."
Brunner also gave Manson his third son. Valentine Michael Manson was born on April 1, 1968.
Charles Manson was good at manipulating people. He took pieces from various religions to form his own philosophy. When The Beatles released their "White Album" in 1968, Manson believed their song "Helter Skelter" predicted an upcoming race war.
Helter Skelter, Manson believed, was going to occur in the summer of 1969 when blacks were going to rise up and slaughter all the white people.
He told his followers that they would be saved because they would travel to an underground city of gold located in Death Valley.
However, when the Armageddon that Manson had predicted did not occur, he said that he and his followers must "show the blacks how to do it." Their first known murder was a music teacher named Gary Hinman on July 25, 1969. The Family staged the scene to look as if the Black Panthers did it.
On August 9, 1969, Manson ordered four of his followers to go to 10050 Cielo Drive in Los Angeles and kill the people inside. The house once belonged to Terry Melcher, the record producer who refused Manson his dreams of a music career. However, Melcher no longer lived there; actress Sharon Tate and her husband, director Roman Polanski, had rented the house.
Charles "Tex" Watson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Linda Kasabian brutally murdered Tate, her unborn baby, and four others who were visiting her (Polanski was in Europe for work). The following night, Manson's followers brutally killed Leno and Rosemary LaBianca in their home.
It took the police several months to determine who was responsible. In December 1969, Manson and several of his followers were arrested. The trial for the Tate and LaBianca murders began on July 24, 1970. On January 25, Manson was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. On March 29, 1971, Manson was sentenced to death.
During his decades in prison, Charles Manson received more mail than any other prisoner in the U.S. He died in November 2017.
Basic Horoscope of Charles Manson
All of Manson's personal points (the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Midheaven, and North Node) have strong aspects that define special meanings.
The conjunction of Sun and Venus ("attention on and involvement with relationships") in the 7th House ("legal involvement; one-on-one encounters") is in a hard square aspect ("conflicts") with Saturn in the 11th House. With Saturn usually representing government, this may define Manson as having conflicts with government due to certain relationships with others that he had or was involved with.
The Moon is in conjunction with the North Node and forming a hard square with the Ascendant at 5 degrees Taurus 13 minutes ("connections with the public or with women in the environment"). Because Manson had a conjunction of Mercury and Jupiter in Scorpio ("much success with communications of a secretive or powerful nature") with Jupiter and Mercury featuring a midpoint very close to a perfect opposition ("trade-offs") with the Ascendant, this defined much success involving communications with women (or the public) in the environment. Also note that with Jupiter very close to opposition with the Ascendant (and in the 7th House), this usually defines much success in court or with legal matters; Manson's Helter Skelter trial was the longest trial in history at that time (and his sentence would be changed from the death penalty to life in prison almost one year after this trial ended).
Manson had spent half of his life incarcerated, but he also had spent a significant majority of his life as a speculative con artist (especially involving women). This may be best explained by the Mars Conjunction Neptune placement ("deceptive actions; con artistry") in the 5th House of speculation.
Manson's Midheaven (at 20 degrees Capricorn 13 minutes) is involved with an opposition with the Part of Fortune at 19 degrees Cancer 24 minutes. The Part of Fortune is often defined as a possible indicator for career, and Manson's Part of Fortune is in a strong trine ("harmony") with his Sun / Venus conjunction and in quincunx ("slight tension") with his Saturn in the 11th House. This could define success with working or relating with groups of people, but also "slight tension with the government" (Saturn) in course of such relationships.
Helter Skelter featured Saturn Square Midheaven ("restrictions or limitations with the legacy of the event") and Neptune Opposition Ascendant ("one-on-one encounters with a great disappointment or a great deception"). Also note that the star of Algol was rising above the Ascendant by 1-2 degrees, and Algol is considered to be the most evil star in the sky. Here is what my notes say about Algol:
Primitive female sexuality; strangulation, beheading, danger to throat and neck, murder, violence, mass catastrophe; the "Evil One", the Demon Star; passionate; intense; hysterical. A pulsating, eclipsing double-star also associated with extreme creativity; an expression of the Dark Side...
Transits Of Helter Skelter To Charles Manson's Chart
Saturn Opposition Jupiter ("a hard choice or a hard decision") and Neptune Trine Pluto ("a disappointing or a deceptive type of transformation") are the two transits that really stand out. Also note that the Helter Skelter Vertex at 27 degrees Libra 35 minutes is almost in direct opposition with Manson's 12th House Uranus at 28 degrees Aries 38 Minutes. This may define the fate of the event known as Helter Skelter to be related to secretive and shocking aspects of Manson's secret activities (as defined by Uranus in the 12th House).
Uranian Astrology Analysis
One of the most noted descriptions of Charles Manson was his occasional use of hand gestures combined with an intense verbal vocabulary aimed at trying to con others in positions of power. And this con artistry was also done while Manson was a juvenile; one juvenile police officer often referred to Manson as "Charlie the Politician" while he was held in detention by juvenile authorities. Fellow Scorpio Neil Young once got a taste of this con artistry of Manson, and whenever he is asked about Manson, he always says the same thing: "he is good. Really good."
For a performance of this explanation above, click https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sYisaeLkk4 as Geraldo Rivera interviews Manson and Manson explains himself.
Manson's Mars Conjunction Neptune in the 5th House defines this con artistry, and it is well expressed on the 90 degree dial (with the Vertex) as seen below. This formula equals 0 degrees Aries, with a 2 minute overlap (but within a 6 minute degree orb that I use):
Mars/Neptune | Vertex may define "con artistry or use of propaganda as a part of one's fate and one's destiny." Because this placement equals the world points, this is a significant astrology definition that implies Manson's ability to be a con artist as being "what the world holds for the entity." Other midpoints that tie in with the Aries point (and thus with Manson's Mars/Neptune | Vertex formula). are seen below:
And here is a midpoint tree description of the chart above:
And this is my description of of this midpoint tree in reference to Charles Manson:
"What the world holds for the individual is involvement with propaganda, and this may include deceptive actions or con artistry. There may be an impact or a combination of one's ideas with horrific crimes or actions, and this may be due to following the wrong faith or wrong ideas that concern crisis or deception. There will also be a strong impact and a strong influence on the community and on women with one's spiritual ideas and thoughts that concern concepts of crisis, malicious activity, and capital crimes."
Manson's Uranian Dial And Helter Skelter
Let's start with Manson's Midheaven. The Midheaven defines "one's reputation and legacy" Manson has Uranus / Hades ("murder; a very mean act; horrific actions involving the occult") within 6 minutes of equality with the Midheaven, and it is thus safe to say that Manson's legacy will be one of a very mean act known as Helter Skelter.
Saturn / Uranus (above) is defined as "conflicts; arguments; physical confrontation." It is actually closer to equality with Manson's actual Midheaven (at 20 degrees Capricorn 12 minutes), but this is close enough to define Helter Skelter as a start of a conflict that would define Manson's legacy as one of "a very mean act involving death."
Per the chart below, Manson's placement of "the high level criminal" (Hades / Kronos) is in equality with "the ability to have an influence on women" (Midheaven / Moon). This is significant; Manson's influence on women was one to convince a group of three women (and one man) to commit a high-level crime that would compare with very few in terms of great horror.
Now let's place this chart on the Helter Skelter chart. This is within half a degree of equality with the Vertex. I am aware that the Vertex is not used in contemporary Uranian astrology, but because the Vertex is often associated with a fate or destiny that one can usually do nothing to change, it may be important in the case of Manson's chart.
The chart below reveals he placement of Manson's Mars / Kronos. This midpoint is the kernel formula for "the great organizer of a plan; the leader of a group with a plan or a mission."
Now let's place this position for Manson's Mars/ Kronos on the Helter Skelter chart. We have this position of Manson's Mars / Kronos equal to Helter Skelter's midpoint of Mars / Hades ("murder; assassination; accidents involving steel objects"). This fits in well with Helter Skelter since Mars rules steel and rules sharp metal instruments, and Manson's favorite knife brand (Buck knives) was the primary weapon used with this crime.
Finally, let's look at the Star of Markab, which is strongly associated with "stabbings; cuts; surgery." Here is what my notes say:
Violence, honours and riches' "Star of Sorrow", disgrace, ruin; literary, legal problems, accidents; cuts, stabs, surgery
23° Pis 37
The Helter Skelter chart below features this "star of sorrow" in conjunction with the North Node, which is a very powerful connection for the energies that are described with this star. Also note that the participants in Helter Skelter were very sexually active (Mars / Venus) and involved with an act of deception (Neptune / Cupido).
Thanks for reading.
Love to all,
Mary Brunner was my best friend in 6th grade.
Just for you Darkstar: here's Rolling Stone Magazine's write-up on Mary Brunner.
Mary Brunner was Manson's first follower, a relatively age-appropriate Wisconsin native who had moved west for a job at the UC Berkeley library. (Born in 1943, she was only nine years younger than the cult leader.) Brunner met Manson in 1967, and took him in. Soon she quit her job and they hit the road in a VW bus, going out to pick up the girls who would become the "family." She gave birth to their son, Valentine "Pooh Bear" Manson in April 1968 – according to legend, Charlie cut the umbilical chord with his teeth. That summer, the family moved into the Spahn Ranch, where Brunner continued to be a mothering figure for the entire group. But she managed to miss the massacres – Brunner was in jail for credit card fraud in early August, when the Tate and La Bianca murders took place – but she had been present for Gary Hinman's July killing, smothering him with a pillow after he was fatally stabbed by Charles "Tex" Watson. She testified against the family in exchange for immunity, but she soon felt badly about turning on them, and in 1971 was part of the group's plan to hijack a plane in order to free Manson and the other incarcerated members – a plan that was thwarted when police caught them stealing guns from a sporting goods store. Brunner spent six years in prison, and moved to the midwest after her 1977 release, where she changed her name and settled into obscurity.
Thanks, Malcolm. She was a new girl and a flunkie (I believe she was 14 years old in 6th grade). She was crazy back then (said she had a baby horse in her basement, and said she owned 100 poodles, and, of course, I believed her, because I was in 6th grade). She also asked me one day if I thought that trees could look up my skirt. She met Manson in 6th grade (and the reason why I remember the name is because Manson was a MAN).
I remember when I bought the book Helter Skelter and I was looking at the pictures and I saw a PROFILE of a girl, and I said to myself: that looks just like Mary Brunner, and under the picture it said: Mary Brunner, what a SHOCK!
I believe the dates in this article are incorrect, unless she was like 20 years old in 6th grade! (I was in 6th grade in 1964).
